What do dental sealants do?
Dental sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars to prevent tooth decay. The sealant acts as a barrier, blocking food particles and bacteria from settling into the grooves of the teeth where brushing may not fully reach. This reduces the risk of cavities by keeping these areas clean and protected. They are also virtually invisible to the untrained eye, so patients do not have to worry about sealants affecting the cosmetic appearance of their teeth.
How long do dental sealants last?
Dental sealants can last up to 10 years with proper care. Over time, they may wear down due to normal chewing and biting, but regular dental check-ups will allow our team to monitor their condition. If necessary, we can touch up or reapply older dental sealants to ensure continued protection against cavities. While sealants are durable, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene and regular cleanings to maximize their longevity and the health benefits they provide.
Are dental sealants only for kids?
While dental sealants are commonly utilized by children and teenagers, who are more prone to cavities as their teeth are still developing, they are not just for kids. Adults, especially those with deep grooves or pits in their molars or a history of cavities, can also benefit from sealants. In general, dental sealants are useful for anyone who wants to add an extra layer of protection against decay, regardless of age.
