How Can I Help Manage Dental Anxiety?

woman under dental sedation to ease anxiety

Do you struggle with dental fear and anxiety when visiting the dentist or undergoing dental treatments? You shouldn’t feel embarrassed or ashamed. Dentists understand that they aren’t everyone’s favorite place to be, so they try to do what they can to help manage your anxiety so that you can get the dental care you need!

Comfortable Office with Amenities

When choosing a dental home, we recommend asking about their office and amenities. Some dentists provide pillows and soft blankets, TVs in treatment rooms, and headphones. These can help ease your anxiety and feel more comfortable and at home during your appointment.

Sedation Dentistry

Dental sedation is a great way to help manage your dental fear and anxiety. There are many forms of sedation available depending on your anxiety levels and treatment needs. The three most common types of dental sedation are nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation.

  • Nitrous oxide is a sweet-smelling gas that puts patients into a euphoric state of being, often resulting in laughter and giggling. It is one of the mildest forms of sedation that can be used for general visits and minor treatments for adults and kids.
  • Oral conscious sedation is a stronger sedative administered in pill form. The pill is taken before an appointment or procedure begins and helps patients feel completely relaxed and at ease while still being conscious.
  • IV sedation is administered through an IV and is used for more complex dental procedures. IV sedation puts patients into a sleep-like state where they most likely won’t remember anything from their treatment.
