Emergencies happen. And when they do, it’s hard to keep calm. But whether you’ve chipped, cracked, or knocked out a tooth, or are experiencing abnormal swelling or bleeding, you don’t have to deal with them alone. At Trillium Dental, we offer emergency dental services so our patients can receive same-day care for some of the most nerve-wracking dental emergencies.
But even before you head over to our Portland, Oregon dental office, we have some tips on how to handle a dental emergency.
What Is a Dental Emergency?
First, let’s define a dental emergency. Although dental emergencies can come in all shapes and sizes, we typically view the following as dental emergencies:
- Unusual or extreme bleeding and swelling
- Chipped, cracked, broken, or completely knocked out tooth
- Faulty dental device
- Post-dental surgery complications
- Tooth abscess
How to Deal with a Dental Emergency
It can be hard not to panic during a dental emergency, but the following tips should help take the edge off.
- If You Have Swelling:
- If You Have Bleeding:
- If You’ve Knocked Out a Tooth:
Ice your cheeks in 10-minute increments. A bag of frozen vegetables should do the trick!
Try to contain the bleeding with gauze. Make sure to replace the gauze if it soaks through.
Place the tooth in a glass of cold milk to preserve it until you get to your dentist’s office. If you are able to get to the office within an hour, your dentist might be able to save your natural tooth!
Are Dental Emergencies Expensive?
We wouldn’t want you to deny yourself of the care you need just because you think you can’t afford it. Trillium Dental offers flexible financing to help our patients receive the care they need at an affordable cost. Sometimes dental emergencies are covered by insurance, but know that even if your dental emergency isn’t, it’ll cost less to treat it now than allow complications to develop in the future.
