At Trillium Dental, your Rose City Park dentist in Portland, we offer emergency dentistry to reduce the stress associated with dental emergencies. So if you experience a sudden dental emergency during the coronavirus pandemic, know that our team can get you back to being pain-free as soon as possible!
In this blog post, we go over different types of dental emergencies and how to handle them.
- Knocked-Out Adult Tooth
- Broken or Cracked Tooth
- Toothache
- Abscess
First, find the knocked-out tooth. When you locate it, handle the tooth gently by its crown (the chewing surface) rather than the delicate root. This is because touching the root can damage it and reduce the tooth’s chance of reimplantation.
Gently rinse the tooth with water or milk, but do not scrub or rub it with any sort of fabric. If possible, gently put the tooth back into its socket, but do not force it. If you can’t put it back in, keep the tooth moist by putting it in a cup of milk or between your gums and cheek.
Call us ASAP for an emergency appointment. Time is of the essence–the sooner we see you, the more likely the tooth can be reattached.
Find any pieces of a broken or cracked tooth. If the pieces are dirty, gently rinse them off with water or milk. Rinse your mouth as well to get out any tiny pieces of tooth or other debris.
If you are bleeding, place a piece of gauze in the area and put a cold compress against your cheek to reduce any swelling. Then, give us a call.
The first step to address a toothache is to rinse your mouth with a mixture of warm water and salt. Try brushing and flossing to dislodge any pesky food particles or other debris.
If your pain persists, call us! You may have an untreated cavity or infection that requires urgent treatment.
An abscess is an infection in your tooth that creates a pocket of pus. An untreated abscess can cause permanent damage to the tissue and teeth in your mouth. If you believe you may have an abscess, or if you have a painful, pimple-like swelling on your gums, call us immediately.
