Whether it’s due to decay, damage, or crowding, having a tooth extracted is sometimes necessary to maintain your oral health. But once the procedure is over, the focus shifts to healing and recovery. Trillium Dental in Portland, OR, is here to guide you through essential aftercare tips that will help you recover smoothly and avoid complications after a tooth extraction.
- Persistent or worsening pain after a few days
- Excessive bleeding that doesn’t stop after applying pressure
- Swelling that increases after the third day
- A bad taste in your mouth or signs of infection, such as fever or chills
- Difficulty opening your mouth or swallowing
Follow The Gauze Instructions
Immediately after your tooth extraction, Dr. White will place a gauze pad over the extraction site to help control bleeding and encourage a blood clot to form. It’s important to keep this gauze in place for at least 30 to 45 minutes after leaving the office. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze with a fresh pad and apply gentle pressure for another 30 minutes. Avoid excessive spitting or rinsing during this time, as it could dislodge the clot.
Take It Easy
After your extraction, it’s crucial to take it easy for the rest of the day. Avoid strenuous activities or heavy lifting, as these can increase blood pressure and may lead to more bleeding at the extraction site. Prop yourself up with pillows if you need to rest—keeping your head elevated can help minimize swelling and discomfort.
Manage Pain and Swelling
It’s normal to experience some discomfort and swelling after a tooth extraction. Dr. White may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, to help manage any pain. Applying an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for 10-20 minutes at a time can also help reduce swelling. Remember to wrap the ice pack in a cloth to avoid direct contact with your skin.
Stick to Soft Foods
For the first few days after your extraction, stick to soft foods that won’t irritate the extraction site. Think yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and smoothies (just avoid using a straw!). As your healing progresses, you can gradually reintroduce other foods into your diet, but avoid anything crunchy, sticky, or hard until you’ve fully recovered.
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking and alcohol can both interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of complications, such as dry socket—a painful condition that occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site is dislodged. It’s best to avoid these activities for at least 48-72 hours after your extraction, but preferably longer to ensure optimal healing.
Keep Your Mouth Clean (But Gently!)
Good oral hygiene is important, even after a tooth extraction. However, you’ll need to modify your routine slightly to avoid disturbing the extraction site. For the first 24 hours, avoid brushing the extraction area directly. After that, you can resume brushing your teeth, but be extra gentle around the site. Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution (about half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) starting 24 hours after the extraction to help keep the area clean and reduce the risk of infection. Swish gently to avoid dislodging the blood clot.
Watch for Signs of Complications
While most extractions heal without any issues, it’s important to be aware of potential complications. Contact Trillium Dental immediately if you experience any of the following:

Schedule a Follow-Up Appointment
Depending on the complexity of your extraction, Dr. White may recommend a follow-up appointment to ensure that your healing is progressing as it should. During this visit, he’ll check the extraction site, remove any sutures if necessary, and provide additional care instructions if needed.
